The City of Doral in Florida Willing to Ban Gambling Florida City Bans Gambling

It has been reported that the city of Doral in Florida has voted to ban gambling in a bid to stop the Trump Organization in its tracks. The organization had allegedly been looking to create a casino in the area after the former president, Donald Trump, relocated to his Mar-a-Lago resort after losing the election to Joe Biden.

Last week, the city’s council voted unanimously on the ban. This could mean that any hope of the former president’s organization acquiring property in the area could be thwarted. There had been several reports that this was what the organization had planned, so city council officials said that they had to act fast.

Taking Whatever Steps Necessary

Even the mayor of the city, Juan Carlos Bermudez, commented on the action taken by the city council in order to stop any casino acquisition from going ahead. He said:

We wanted to make sure we weighed in. We will take whatever steps necessary.

Eric Trump, the former president’s son, stated earlier this year “Many people consider Trump Doral to be unmatched from a gaming perspective — at 700 acres, properties just don’t exist of that size and quality in South Florida, let alone in the heart of Miami.”

Eric Trump runs the resort, and the hope was that a casino could be built at the resort as the result of a deal that was made by the state governor in April this year.

Earlier this year, Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, signed a gaming agreement valued at half a billion dollars with the Seminole Tribe of Florida. The agreement allows the creation of huge casino resorts similar to those found in Las Vegas as well as mobile sports betting at the tribal facilities. This was earmarked to be completed by April 2023.

The deal included the prohibition of objections by the tribe to the transfer of existing slot licenses to anywhere within 15 miles of its casino on tribal land. Trump’s Doral is situated around 18 miles away from there.

Following the agreement, there was speculation that the state governor had struck the deal in order to benefit Trump. However, he described these accusations as being ‘idiotic’ and based on politics.

Dashing Trump’s Casino Dream

The unanimous vote last week means that Trump’s dreams of a casino at the golf resort could be dashed, and the only exception to the decision would be if the residents of the city approved it by referendum.

According to reports, Eric Trump has been very vocal about his desire to build a casino at the resort in a bid to try and boost revenue. The resort is said to have been struggling of late, and a casino being created there could have made a big positive difference.

Last year, income from the resort is said to have plummeted by $57 million compared to 2015. Hundreds of workers were furloughed or laid off as a result of the poor performance of the resort compared to previously.
