Row of Slots in Casino Gaming Income in Nevada

According to data from the Nevada Gaming Control Board, Nevada saw impressive gaming income figures for September. The data suggests that the state’s performance overshadowed previous years. The Las Vegas Strip enjoyed record September revenue figures, contributing significantly to Nevada’s overall monthly gaming revenue increase.

The Strip, which is known for its large number of luxury casinos and resorts, saw its 60 licensed casinos rake in a staggering $741.2 million from gamblers during the month. This surge took the state’s total gaming revenue to around $1.27 billion, which reflects an increase of 1.7 percent compared to the same period last year. This also marked an all-time high for September earnings.

Downturn Experienced in Some Areas

Despite the Strip’s success in September, many other areas in Nevada experienced a downturn in terms of gaming performance. Laughlin’s gaming market saw a 6.4 percent increase to $41.6 million, but areas including the Boulder Strip, Mesquite, and downtown Las Vegas suffered declines of up to 9.4 percent.

Clark County’s wider network of 219 legalized gaming facilities contributed significantly to the fiscal year’s strong start, according to officials. The first quarter of the 2023-2024 fiscal year saw a 2.9 percent increase in profits across the state, taking the figure to $3.9 billion. There was a 3.6 percent rise in total accumulated income to $3.3 billion for the county.

The Strip’s individual profits soared by 5.5 percent to $2.2 billion over the July-September period, indicating impressive growth.

Michael Lawton, NGCB’s senior economic analyst, said:

Nevada continued to record gaming win amounts in excess of pre-pandemic levels this month. Statewide total win was 20.1 percent or $212.3 million over September 2019. This month also represented the 31st consecutive month that the state has recorded at least $1 billion in monthly gaming win.

He also outlined special events such as shows by superstar Adele, which helped to bring more visitors to the area.

Table Games Prove Popular

Table games, particularly baccarat, proved very popular according to the figures. Gaming income reached $456 million, up 16.6 percent from the previous year. There was a drop in stakes of 4.4 percent to $2.9 billion, but game retention improved to 15.84 percent from 12.97 percent. Baccarat alone brought in $148.8 million, reflecting an 85.8 increase.

On the other hand, slot machines did not enjoy the same level of success. Slot income dipped by 5.01 percent to $814.6 million, with profits from coin-in slots sliding by 1.4 percent to $11.6 billion.

The percentage of slot winnings decreased to 7.01 percent from 7.28 percent the previous year, marking a decline in three of the last four months. On the Strip, slot revenue fell by 6.4 percent to $383.1 million, and coin-in slot income decreased by 3.7 percent to $4.7 billion.

September’s downturn in slot machine income is the first experienced in 2023. It ended a 30-month run of increasing slot revenue on the Strip since March 2021. This will be disappointing for casino operators, but the rise in table gaming revenue will help to soften the blow.
