Following many past attempts to get online poker legalized in New York, lawmakers are once again hoping to change the laws with the appearance of a bill from Sen. Joseph Addabbo. Bills have been filed every year for the past six years but have ultimately failed to legalize online poker gaming in the state.

Last year saw Michigan and West Virginia pass online poker gaming laws, and lawmakers from the Empire State now hope to be able to do the same. While poker gaming at brick-and-mortar casinos is allowed, online poker gaming and gambling are still banned in the state of New York.

A Game of Skill

The new bill that has been put back on file for 2020 is S18, and this aims to have poker declared a game of skill rather than chance.

This means that poker would no longer be classed as one of the banned games of chance in the state, which would then enable players to enjoy poker online rather than having to go to a physical location.

According to reports, online poker operators in New Jersey have enjoyed huge success since a bill was signed into law by Governor Chris Christie in 2013. At that time, it was the third state in the country to legally allow online poker gaming, with the other two being Nevada and Delaware.

After signing the bill into law, the state of New Jersey also brought in an agreement that allowed poker players in all three legalized states to play against one another. At the time, the state Governor said:

New Jersey has been a pioneer in the development of authorized, regulated online gaming which has been a budding success since its launch in late 2013. Pooling players with Nevada and Delaware will enhance revenue growth, attract new customers, and create opportunities for players and internet gaming operators.

With the success of states like New Jersey, officials in New York are hoping that they will finally succeed in legalizing online poker and enjoy similar success.

A Good Time for New York to Legalize Online Poker

Many believe that this could be the ideal time for New York to legalize online poker, with the popularity of online casino poker and online gambling in general having rocketed over recent weeks.

Since the lockdown was enforced and casinos were closed, many people have taken to online gaming, and this is likely to continue even when lockdown restrictions are lifted. While land-based casinos have been losing money, online casino operators across the country have seen profits rocket.

With the closure of brick-and-mortar casinos since mid-March, the state has lost out on a lot of revenue, and casinos have lost millions. Legalizing online poker could help both casino operators and the state to claw back some of the money lost as a result of the COVID-19 closures.

However, with the legalization of online poker in New York having been blocked so many times in the past, many are unsure whether there will be greater success this year.
