Citizens of Maryland may soon enjoy online casinos Legal Online Casinos

Now that online sports betting has been officially legalized in Maryland, the state is said to be considering the legalization of online casino gaming.

An online casino bill has been submitted to authorities by two senators, Nancy King and Ron Watson. The bill is aimed at getting online casino gaming legalized in the state, and it is the first bill to try and do this.

This could be a long and challenging road for the state if the legalization of sports betting is anything to go by. While operators have been offering access to retail sports betting in Maryland since the latter part of 2021, online sports betting was not legalized until last year.

If online casino gaming is legalized in the state, it means that the six video lottery operators in Maryland will be able to start offering online games. The operators include Hollywood Casino, MGM, Horseshoe Casino, and several others.

Providing More Benefits to the Economy

According to Senator Ron Watson, people have now seen how beneficial sports betting legalization has been for the state’s economy. He said that online casinos could also offer the same sort of value to help boost the state’s finances. Watson said:

Especially now that folks have started to see the revenue we can get from sports betting, I think we’re past the point of hesitation and we’ve realized that casinos are so valuable to our economy here in Maryland.

He added that if there was another pandemic that resulted in the world of sports shutting down again, there would be no money being generated from physical casinos. However, if online casino gaming was legal, it would provide an alternative stream of revenue to aid the state’s education system.

Addressing Problem Gambling

According to reports, the new bill that has been submitted is ten pages long, and one of its priorities appears to be the legalization of online poker gaming.

In addition, it is reported that the bill addressed potential issues with gambling addiction should online casino gaming get the green light.

A number of stipulations have been made in the bill in a bid to reduce the risk of gambling addiction and problems. These include the display of a problem gambling hotline number when people log in or out of their online casino accounts.

Some of the other steps outlined in the bill to address problem gambling include limitations on customer accounts, temporary suspension of online casino accounts, and annual reports from gaming authorities about the impact of online gaming on problem gambling.

A Possible Boon for the State

Online betting and online casinos have both soared in popularity over the past few years. The lockdowns during the pandemic meant that many people turned to online casinos as a form of entertainment in states where it was already legalized.

The popularity of these online platforms has continued even after restrictions relating to the pandemic were lifted. This ongoing popularity means that many people might sign up for online casino accounts, and the state could make a lot of revenue from gambling taxes.
