Since most of the 14 countries participating in the Match Poker Nations Cup are still on lockdown over coronavirus concerns, the governing body of The International Federation of Match Poker (IFMP) Nations Cup announced that the final would be hosted online on May 30 and 31, 2020.

The competition being moved online means that the players will be able to participate from the comfort and safety of their homes instead of having to step out to casinos. A gameplay software will allow each of the team members to see all their table competitors and also communicate with them while the sessions are going on.

Players will also be allowed to communicate with their captains, other team members, managers, as well as analysts during their breaks.

The switch to an online platform also means that each player will have a scheduled timing. While some participants may have to play early in the morning, others may have to play later in the evening or night.

Working to get back to live events, says President

The President of The International Federation of Match Poker (IFMP), Patrick Nally, said that they are lucky they have a gameplay software that enables the playing of a “live” event but with players participating from their homes. Due to the pandemic and its effects, every international sports federation is facing huge obstacles at this time.

Nally added:

The social relationships developed through the hosting of our Match Poker events are important to us and we’re looking forward to getting back to live events as soon as practical. But we will continue to support our international competition schedule in this manner until such times as our ‘sporting family’ can be reunited.

For this year’s Match Poker Nations Cup finals, some of the top participating countries include reigning world champions Ukraine, reigning European champions, as well as reigning Asian champions India.

Moreover, to make things interesting, a president’s pick team, as well as an invitational “Digital Nation” team, will also be participating in the tournament.

What makes Match Poker different

What makes Match Poker so unique from other poker tournaments is that it was devised as a team sport by The International Federation of Match Poker (IFMP) to reduce the element of luck, which is pretty common among other forms of poker, especially conventional ones.

Therefore, it isn’t a contest where luck has a play, but rather, a contest that is based on the skills of the players.

It’s more or less like Texas Hold’em but played in teams. There are different tables, with each table hosting one member of each team in different seat positions. All the players receive an equal number of chips so that they start each hand equally, and their cards are received on a digital device.

Since the same cards are dealt on each of the tables, every player that sits on Seat 1 will have identical cards. This makes it possible for the best teams and the best players to be identified. After every hand, the combined chips of each team are compared, and points are awarded. The stacks are reset, and the next hand can begin. The team with the most points after the completion of a pre-determined number of sets is declared the winner.
