PokerStars launched in Pennsylvania on November 4, becoming the Keystone state’s first online poker room. The gaming operator has a monopoly in the Pennsylvanian online poker realm, and it doesn’t appear that the company is looking back anytime soon. Being a sole operator in the online poker market in the state, PokerStar is seeking to fully capitalize the opportunity by announcing a new tournament series, the Pennsylvania Championship of Online Poker (PACOOP).

What is the Pennsylvania Championship of Online Poker (PACOOP)?

The Pennsylvania Championship of Online Poker (PACOOP) is an online championship that is scheduled to run from November 30 to December 16. It will feature 50 MMT events and offer buy-ins ranging from $30 to $750. The marquee MTT will also feature a guarantee of $100,000.

To evoke as much interest in players as possible, the team hosting the series has lined up a collection of satellites. Besides second-chance freerolls, players of PokerStars Pennsylvania can qualify for a game with as little as $1. The highlight of the series, however, will be the main event, priced at $300.

Organizing multi-MTT-festivals is a trademark of PokerStars, which it has upheld dedicatedly over the past few years. Internationally, the Spring Championship of Online Poker (SCOOP) and the World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP), both hosted by PokerStars, have always been popular.

However, as the domain has evolved and become segmented, local offshoots have emerged as a useful PR tool. In Europe, PokerStars hosted the Southern Europe Championship of Online Poker (SECOOP), which has helped the company gain traction in emerging markets. Similarly, by hosting PACOOP, PokerStars seeks to establish an unshakable dominance in Pennsylvania.

Matt Primeaux, president of the Stars Group, recently spoke about the launch of PACOOP. He said:

The Championship of Online Poker, or COOP, is one of our most prestigious events and we’re proud to give Pennsylvania its own.

What are the promotions available at PACOOP?

PokerStars Pennsylvania announced PACOOP just within a month of its launch in the state. The new tournament series follows the successful “COOP” model, which is played across the globe. Besides the satellites, PACOOP players can get tournament entries by winning some unique promotions. These include the following:

  1. Main Event Depositor Free-roll – This is an exclusive event at PACOOP that gives 25 Main Event tickets, making a total of $7,500. The event is set for December 15 at 2 PM EST. To participate, players will have to deposit $50 or more by December 15.
  2. Second Chance Free-rolls – These are special events meant for PACOOP players who get eliminated because of a shortage of money in the series. Each free-roll will get $1,250 in satellite tickets and entries to PACOOP events, making a total of $20,000. The free-rolls will run daily from December 1 to December 16 at 6 PM. On Sundays, they will run at 3 PM.

Will the event be any different from its New Jersey counterpart?

PokerStars’ approach to the tournament is much more conservative compared to its first series offering in New Jersey called NJSCOOP. Pennsylvania has a total population of about 13 million, making it the sixth-most populous state in the country. It has about 4 million more people than New Jersey, meaning it is a 30% larger potential player pool.

PokerStars PA got a significantly higher response from the players during its testing period than what was seen in New Jersey in NJSCOOP 2016. Also, the tournaments in PokerStars PA have much bigger guarantees than those in New Jersey. So, given the buzz and excitement surrounding the PACOOP and the Keystone state’s closeness to highly populated areas, it can be expected that the tournament will attract players from other US states too.
