On Wednesday, the 14th of August, Pennsylvania’s Gaming Control Board awarded a Category 4 satellite casino license to Stadium Casino LLC. The new license will enable Stadium Casino to construct a brand spanking new $150 million mini-casino at Westmoreland Mall in Hempfield Township, which is in the western quadrant of the state, southeast of Pittsburg.

Situated about a 45-minute drive away from downtown Pittsburgh, the 42-year-old mall will soon give Greensburg-area residents great gambling options right at their doorstep. The new casino will take the place of The Bon-Ton, a department store, that went out of business and shut shop in August 2018.

Amenities

Announcing their plans at the gaming board hearing on Wednesday, casino officials said that their new venue Live! Casino Pittsburgh is scheduled to open its doors in 2020.

Spread across an expansive 100,000 square feet of space, and featuring 30 table games and 750 slot machines, the casino will also include a restaurant and bar area on its second floor. Plus, there will also be an events center and an entryway that will provide for easy access to the on-site parking garage.

Creating more jobs

In December 2018, officials from Maryland-based The Cordish Companies, which owns Stadium Casino LLC, stated that the new casino could provide as many as 500 jobs. A majority of these will be full-time. Plus, the developers have promised “nationally recognized restaurants and live entertainment venues.”

Though a construction timeline has yet to be shared, renovation work inside the mall commenced in April this year.

In a statement released by Cordish on Wednesday, its Managing Partner, Joe Weinberg, said that the company was very excited and honored to have been awarded the license by the Gaming Control Board and thanked them for their consideration.

He added,

We look forward to working with state and local officials, and the entire community, as we move forward with development of a true world-class destination that will attract people from throughout the region for a unique gaming and entertainment experience.

Other plans in the pipeline for Stadium Casino

During Wednesday’s board meeting, Stadium also announced that they had secured a Category2 license renewal for the construction and development of Live! Hotel and Casino Philadelphia, which will be a much bigger project.

Besides these new projects, the organization also operates:

  • Live! Casino & Hotel in Arundel Mills Maryland
  • XFINITY Live entertainment complex in Philadelphia

Benefits for Westmoreland County

Live! Casino Pittsburgh is predicted to provide Westmoreland County with:

  • Construction revenue of $148 million
  • 960 direct and indirect construction jobs
  • Annual revenue of $188 million

Hope on the Horizon for Westmoreland Mall

Westmoreland Mall is one of the biggest shopping complexes in the western quadrant of Pennsylvania.

According to a report published on March 2018, the shopping complex had close to 100 retail spaces. Unfortunately, over one-tenth of them, including Bon-Ton, were unoccupied at the time. Plus, there were additional spaces that were expected to be vacated soon after, as well.

But this mall isn’t an exception. As per a Reuters Reports on April 2019, Reis Inc., a real estate research company, reported that vacancy rates across malls in the country stood at an average of 10.2%. And this figure was expected to increase.

However, once the new Live! Casino Pittsburgh opens its doors, the Westmoreland Mall will inevitably benefit from additional foot traffic and in all probability, much lower vacancy rates as well.
