Last week, the World Series of Poker announced the dates and schedules for all seventeen $10,000 to $50,000 championship tournaments. What makes this year’s event so exciting is that competitors will be playing not only for money but also for the WSOP bracelets and 15 freezeouts.

WSOP championship events are tournaments with a buy-in of at least $10,000. According to the schedule, there are 17 different poker variants, including the $50,000 Poker Players Championship. With this latest announcement, the World Series of Poker now has a total of 32 confirmed events for its 51st year.

According to WSOP Vice President Jack Effel, championship events such as the ones just announced are usually smaller than most and filled with a few elite pros.

Effel further said:

The Championship Events are always among the most special offered at the WSOP each year. We are proud to be the only tournament series who spreads such an offering and have worked with some of the games most distinguished players this off-season to ensure our schedule and the events themselves align well with where poker is in 2020.

What is new in this year’s schedule?

One of the biggest changes in the schedule comes from the Poker Players Championship event. In the past years, the event has usually been an 8-game format with a HORSE rotation, including no-limit hold’em, pot-limit Omaha, and 2-7 triple draw. This year, these games will be kept in the mix, and a no-limit 2-7 single draw will be added as well.

A $10,000 online buy-in event has also been added to the series, while it looks like the $10,000 no-limit hold’em heads-up event has been removed. Although there is a possibility that the dates for this event may be released separately, it is highly unlikely.

The first $10,000 buy-in event of the series – Omaha Hi-Lo 8 or Better – has been scheduled to begin on June 8, just eight days after the first bracelet event of the World Series of Poker. The biggest event, the Poker Players Championship with a buy-in of $10,000, has been scheduled for June 22.

The popular $10,000 HORSE Championship is also back this year and is scheduled for June 9. Many players who are competing in the Poker Players Championship are expected to participate in this event as well. The main event will be held from July 1 to 3, with WSOP.com ONLINE NLH happening on July 2.

Championship leaderboard introduced this year

This year, WSOP players can play for more than large amounts of money and WSOP bracelets. In 2020, the World Series of Poker is offering more prizes for its high rollers. This year, players who participate in the Championship events will be playing for a shot at a separate leaderboard too. This leaderboard is similar to Player of the Year, along with other prizes.

WSOP has not yet released details regarding the Championship leaderboard and the associated prizes. In a press release, VP of Corporate Communications, Seth Palansky, announced that more details would be announced later on, closer to the WSOP. He said that

a winner will be crowned and prizes up for grabs.
